May was a crazy month. We had a lot going on, Keller had to travel quite a bit for work, and he also had carpal tunnel surgery on his right hand! The nurses let us come back to pre-op before the surgery and the kids were very supportive of Keller.
Kamy came down with a massive, raging eye infection in early May. We took her to the eye doctor and he said it was one of the worst infections he’d ever seen. It took about 4 weeks and three different antibiotics to knock it out. Kamy was a trooper and did a really good job leaving her eye alone so it could heal. Because of the infection though, she wasn’t able to get in the pool for swim classes in May and had to watch Caden instead.
Kamy and Daddy planned on running in the Canton 10K after their successful first 5K back in March. They were using the Couch to 5K training program which has another program for the run from 5K to 10K. There were some major forces at work against running the 10K! Unfortunately, Keller had a lot of travel for work in April and May, so they weren’t as prepared as they hoped to be, and hadn’t run a 10K in one session prior to the race. We made a last minute run into DFW two days before to help Min with her computer, so we would be driving from NRH to Canton instead of from home. Add in Kamy’s raging pink eye infection, a massive thunderstorm around Terrell that morning, and feeling unprepared, they almost didn’t run. Keller didn’t want to run and he kept asking Kamy, “Are you sure you want to run?” We even made it to the parking lot at the race and sat in the car in the pouring rain, with ponchos on, debating the run. But Kamy really really really wanted to run. Fortunately, the rain ended about 5 minutes after the race began, so they tied their shoes, put on their bibs, and made it happen! Keller and Kamy were such troopers and did a fabulous job! Despite the all the challenges, they finished in a great time of 1:25:06, only 5 minutes off their 5K pace! AND Kamy was the only runner under 10, so she got a trophy for top of her age bracket. And we all know how Miss Competitive feels about winning!
The Canton 10K was in conjunction with the annual balloon festival, so there were vendors and activities set up after the race, including bounce houses and inflatable slides. The kids had a blast playing after the race. You couldn’t tell that Kamy had already run a 10K if you were just watching her energy level. Unfortunately, the rain that morning meant the balloons weren’t flying that morning, but we still had a successful day.
One weekend later, Keller took the kids into to DFW to go to a WNBA basketball game with Payton, Corinne, and Granpops. They met for dinner beforehand and then had fun watching the game. It was the first basketball game either kid had been to, so it was new territory and Payton got to answer a lot of questions about the rules of the game.
Just after Keller’s surgery, we scheduled a trip to Houston to visit Payton and Corinne. We stopped at the Houston Children’s Museum for a couple hours on the way down, which both kids really enjoyed. On Saturday we went down to Galveston for the day. We ended up at the East Beach and had a great time! It wasn’t too busy, despite being Memorial Day weekend, and the weather was great. The kids loved playing in the water, jumping the waves, and digging in the sand. We were also able to meet up with Lauren and Karl for lunch on Sunday before heading home Monday. We had a nice time staying with Payton and Corinne and playing with Winston The Dog.
While in Houston, Kamy lost another tooth! One of her front top teeth came out, so now she is really snaggle toothed!
Kamy and Daddy finished reading “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe” this month too. For school, we finished reading “Little House in the Big Woods” and started to learn about Latin America and South America. For math, Kamy is working on multiplication, double digit addition, greater than and less than, word problems, and counting coins. She always has a handwriting or sentence practice worksheet to complete and I ask her to read at least one book daily. Our rule for school is as long as we are (1) at home and (2) don’t have guests, we do school. There were more days “off” than usual this month with our traveling, but it all works out in the end.
Lastly, Baskin Robbins does a promotion on the 31st of each month (when that happens) for discount ice cream. I took the kids to get ice cream that afternoon and they shared a regular size scoop of cotton candy ice cream. Not my choice of flavor, but that’s okay because I ordered my own.
