Kamy decided she wanted to have a party. Just because. So we had a Just Because party! We invited another homeschooling family that we have really connected with. Unfortunately, only Ashlyn was able to come play, but the kids had a great time anyway. The kids help me cut up fruit, make whipped cream, and bake and ice a rainbow cake. We set up the kiddie pool and a slip n slide too! The three of them all had a great time and they’re already lobbying for another Just Because party. Who needs a reason to have friends over anyway?
Kamy, Daddy, and Caden have been playing a new-to-them Zelda game. It works on the DS handhelds and it is a 3 player co-op game. What could be better?! The kids are having to learn to slow down (especially Caden) and work together (especially Kamy) in order to complete the challenges. So far it has been a hit, but it does require everyone to play.
Summer gymnastics has kicked off. Kamy is enrolled in two classes, so she goes on both Monday and Thursday. She is pretty close to being able to move up to level 4, so she is hoping that she can pass level testing at the end of the summer. With classes twice a week, I think she’ll make it! She is a lot more confident with the level three skills, so it has been fun to watch her improve.
Kamy has locked onto reading the Rainbow Fairies series. She wanted a long series to read, but she didn’t really realize how MANY books there are in the series. There are more than 200! Fortunately most of them are available on eBook from the library, so I have been downloading 3 new eBooks for her each day. We would like her to read some more challenging books, but for now we aren’t going to push back on this series. At this rate, she’ll finish the series in a month or so and will be ready for something new anyway.
Kamy has been flying through the various summer reading programs. Our local library has one that is based on minutes of reading and she was a third of the way done in the first 8 days! She’s also completed the HEB program (read 10 books) and is chipping away at the Half Price Books challenge. She is a voracious reader!
Daddy and Kamy have been reading Where the Red Fern Grows at night and finished it at the end of June. I loved that book when I was in middle school, so I was interested to see how Kamy felt about it. She said that she liked it, but she doesn’t emotionally connect with content in books, so even the kicker at the end didn’t phase her. Next up, The Golden Compass.
Kamy has become very interested in animal conservation. She wants to know which animals are endangered and how she can save them. Of course, the saving doesn’t involve established non-profits or other organizations. No, instead she’s going to go into the rain forest to find the animals who are in danger, catch them, and then carry and walk them to protected land. Or build a zoo where she can rehabilitate them before releasing them back in the wild. She’s on a mission! She did have a side plan to avoid North Korea so she could safely get to Mongolia and save saiga antelope. Kamy spent some of her lemonade stand money on a book about elephant conservation, so I have been hearing a lot of facts about elephants lately!
Sadly, Kamy has asked me several times not to sing her song at night. I’ve been singing it to her at bedtime ever since she was little-bitty, but she doesn’t want the same song any more. =(
School is rolling right along. Kamy is working through the early third grade math content, with little trouble. She definitely has a math-oriented brain! In history we’re learning about Rome and Cleopatra. Our literature has been Nim’s Island, about a girl living with her father on a tropical island. Both kids really like her adventures!
