Tuesday was train day!
We arranged for tickets on the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad on Tuesday morning. The plan was to have Keller, Min, Payton, and Kamy get on at the Rockwood station and take the train up to Silverton. Then I was going to meet them up in Silverton for lunch and pick up Keller and Kamy to take them back home. We weren’t quite sure how interested Kamy would be in the train for the full ride — it’s about two and a half hours from Rockwood to Silverton, and sometimes that can be a long time for a two year old who has to stay seated and doesn’t have much to do beyond looking out the window. We’ve been talking about the train for the last two weeks and Kamy couldn’t wait to get to ride on it. We can hear the trains coming through the station from the cabin, so we had daily reminders!
When the train pulled up to pick everyone up, Kamy was so excited! She was waving her arms and smiling the whole time. It wasn’t until the train was right up next to her that she tensed up a bit and wasn’t quite sure about this huge, black, loud thing in front of her. It was all good once they got on though!
Kamy, of course, did awesome! She really loved the ride up and had a blast on the train. She was particularly fond of putting her head out the window as it was rolling along … silly girl!
While we were in Silverton, we got a chance to eat lunch and wander around town. When we met up for lunch in the afternoon, we asked Kamy if she wanted to go back to the cabin in the truck or if she wanted to ride the train back. She picked the train!
Since I have never taken the train all the way to Silverton before, Keller and I swapped places and he drove back to the cabin with Caden while I got on the train in his place. Before the train pulled out, poor Caden decided that maybe he didn’t really care for trains after all. The engineer warned Keller that he was getting ready to blow the whistle, but they were still a bit too close for Caden’s comfort and he was NOT pleased! Poor boy … don’t tell him we laughed at his sad little face.
Keller and Caden waited until we left to go to the truck and drive home. While they were waiting, Caden ran a constant monologue of ma ma ma ma ma ma. It was pretty cute! Bye bye Mamamamama …
Kamy lost some interest in the train ride on the way back, but she still did awesome. She bounced between Min and Payton’s laps and watched the world go by. I enjoyed the train ride myself — I took a zillion photos with my new camera (okay, actually about 350) and had quite a time weeding through them all. =P The train rolls through some gorgeous scenery along the Animas River.
We had a wonderful time on the train!
