Between our trip to DisneyLand and the Christmas holidays, December was a really busy month. We continued to do school as long as we were home, so Kamy is plugging along at math. She is more than half way through the 2nd grade material. The biggest hurdle for her lately is double digit subtraction with regrouping (ie – borrowing). She can do it, and I think she understands what is really happening, but she does not like it. Our new chapter book in BYL is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Both kids really like the story! They always beg me to read another chapter or two when it’s time to stop. In history we are still learning about the Mesopotamia area — Babylon and Assyria. We are touching briefly on the Indus River Valley civilization and the ancient Chinese civilization along the Yellow River.
Kamy has been super sweet lately. We are actively encouraging her to be thoughtful — especially toward Caden. She has been kinder and more patient with everyone. She’s still a great helper too!
Kamy bought some blue glitter snowflake ornaments for her pink tree in her room. They match with the Elsa ornament she bought at DisneyLand, so she is making her tree blue and pink and silver.
Daddy and Kamy finished reading Harriet the Spy and started reading the Spiderwick Chronicles. She LOVES Spiderwick! It is just the right amount of suspense and mystery and she always wants to keep reading to find out what happens next.
Kamy definitely has her Daddy’s sense of humor. It’s a bit on the sarcastic side and she is understanding more of his jokes. She also has a big, rolling laugh that makes you smile to hear.
Just before Christmas, we took the kids and Granpops to ride on the Polar Express! The Palestine Railroad offers Polar Express trips between Thanksgiving and Christmas and I’d heard that it is a lot of fun. I’m not sure if my expectations were unrealistic or their efforts have diminished over time, but I was not impressed. Regardless, the kids did good and seemed to have an okay time. We won’t be buying tickets again though.
The kids asked to stay up until midnight on New Years Eve. We told them they could as long as they had a good attitude, weren’t complaining, and weren’t expecting us to entertain them the whole time. Kamy and I attempted to get ice cream from Baskin Robbins but they were closed early, so we picked up Blue Bell ice cream from Brookshires and brought it home as a treat. We also watched Singing in the Rain. Kamy made it to midnight! She can do a lot when she puts her mind to something!
