Roll Over, Roll Over

McKamy had a breakthrough Monday afternoon.  While she’s been able to roll over from her back to her tummy for several weeks now, she never really got into a habit of doing it very often.  This is, in part, due to the fact that she usually hates being on her tummy.  Therefore there is very little incentive to roll over!  She doesn’t understand cause and effect to this degree yet, but she certainly doesn’t go out of her way to roll over.

Until Monday.  It’s like a little switch flipped on in her mind and she said, “Hey, I can do this!”  And then she rolled over.  Not once.  Not twice.  Not even five times.  From Monday afternoon through Monday night, she probably rolled from her back to her tummy 20+ times!  Surprisingly enough, she wasn’t super upset about being on her tummy either.  I’m so blown away by how her little mind seems to learn new things incredibly quickly.  When she’d start fussing about being on her tummy, I’d roll her back over (trying to teach her how to roll from her tummy to her back) and step back again.  There were moments Monday night when I’d literally turn around and she’d be back on her stomach 3 seconds later.  Talk about fast!

In progress:

Success!

Then on Tuesday she managed to roll from her tummy to her back!  Granted, it only partially counts because one of her arms was still trapped under her body so she didn’t have to deal with her arm being in the way.  I know it’s only a matter of time until she figures out how to roll either direction and she’ll be flipping back and forth constantly.

Working on it:

We’re already seeing great progress toward crawling too.  She doesn’t have the coordinated movement yet, but she’s started to prop herself up with her arms to help support her weight.  She’ll also wiggle and squirm with her arms and legs when she’s on her tummy.  It’s not accomplishing much right now, but it’s only a matter of time until she has another breakthrough and she’ll officially be mobile.

The world sure looks different from this angle!  Look at me holding up my head like a big girl …

Watch out world, McKamy’s coming for you!

Note – And now I have an old rhyme stuck in my head, “Ten in a Bed”

There were ten in a bed

And the little one said

“Roll Over, Roll Over”

So they all rolled over and one fell out …

There were nine in a bed

And the little one said

“Roll Over, Roll Over”

So they all rolled over and one fell out …

There was one in a bed

And the little one said

“Goodnight!”
