Kamy – March

Happy birthday to my sweet, charming, smart Kamy-girl!  We were able to go into DFW to celebrate her birthday and had a special weekend.  Kamy helped me make her birthday cake and she did the icing and sprinkles by herself!

Kamy is finding new ways to reach out and be sweet.  She’s started to give more unsolicited hugs, asking to be held, and brought both Momma and Daddy flowers she picked for us.  Caption from Daddy:  “Fresh-picked spring flowers from Kamy. Okay, five is a pretty cool age.”

We broke open a new workbook for Kamy this month.  She’s pretty much finished off the preK workbook she’s been doing and it really wasn’t challenging her any more.  She likes the Kindergarten one a lot and has spent quite a bit of time working through the exercises.  I’m starting to research curriculum that I may want to transition to, but there’s so much out there it is hard to narrow it down.  I’m leaning toward one particular math book right now, but the rest are still up in the air.  =)  She’s a smart cookie and I know it’ll keep me on my toes keeping her challenged and engaged in learning.

We have started learning the states.  Kamy has a floor puzzle with the US map and each state has it’s own piece (except New England).  Kamy knows where almost all the states go and can put the puzzle together really quickly.  In fifth grade I learned a song with all the state names in alphabetical order — which Kamy has since learned.   She knows the song by heart and sings it all the time, though there is apparently a state called New Hamster.  <wink>

I’ve pulled out the kids keyboard we bought years ago and the kids have both been playing with it.  Kamy has been working on where each letter is and will “type” out the words she knows how to spell on the keyboard.  I certainly didn’t know where the letters were on a keyboard at five, but she does!

Kamy can now complete the first level of Super Mario Brothers by herself!  It took some encouragement and multiple tries, but she finally got to the flag at the end!  Kamy has a tendency to shy away from some challenges, especially if she doesn’t know exactly how to do something.  We have really been working on her persistence and celebrating when she completes something that doesn’t come as naturally to her.  She’s a bit of a perfectionist about some things, so we want to encourage her to try things out of her comfort zone and enjoy the process of figuring it out, not just doing what she knows.

Lastly, we had an incredibly wet March in Lone Star.  We ended up with about 9″ of rain throughout the month — with two particular storms that let loose a deluge of water.  While that kept the kids indoors more than they would like, it also made for some fabulous puddles and mud to play in.  Thank goodness for showers and washing machines!  These photos below are from three separate days of playing in the mud!

One weekend we went out to Linden for the day, to scope out any damage from the storms that passed through and to clear the trails.  The lake was high from a combination of the rain and a beaver dam, so when we tore it down, there was a lot of water coming down at the waterfall!

I’m so proud of my five year old!  It is really hard to believe it has already been that long, though if I think back through everything we’ve done and how she’s grown and changed, five doesn’t seem nearly long enough either.  Happy birthday sweet girl!
