State Fair of Texas

While we were in DFW last month, we took an afternoon trip to the State Fair of Texas.  Keller and I used to go every year, but it’s been at least two years since we went.  Garin and Jess were able to join us too, which was really a nice treat.

We had a great time seeing all the sights and doing the iconic State Fair things – corny dogs, turkey legs, the car show, Big Tex, the bird show, pig races and petting zoo, and the giant Texas Star.

One of the first things we saw when we entered was the carousel.  Miss Kamy wanted to ride it and Jess went with her.  She had so much fun!

The bird show wasn’t quite as entertaining for the kids as we thought it might be, I don’t think there was quite enough action … and we were too far away for the kids to really be interested.  We enjoyed getting to rest our feet and play with the kids for a bit though!

We took a short trip through the car show … the kids’ attention was fairly limited so we made it quick.  We did pose with a VW beetle though!

From the start, Keller said he wanted to take Kamy up in the Texas Star.  It’s such an icon of the Fair and we thought she would enjoy the view.  Surprisingly, Kamy didn’t require tickets, so Caden and I both went up with them too!  I think Caden liked it more than Kamy.  =)  Let’s just say we had a firm grip on Caden’s pants the whole time we were up there.

The petting zoo were pretty cool for both kids (and us big kids too) since they had a giraffe, yaks, ostriches and emu, zebra, camels, four horned sheep and all sorts of other cool animals.  I know the only place I’ve been that close to a giraffe was Fossil Rim, and that’s if you’re lucky. The pig races were fairly interesting too — though we left early to make it to the parade.

The last stop for the night was watching the parade of lights.  Both kids were enthralled, especially by the colorful floats.

We had a nice afternoon and really enjoyed getting to show Kamy some of the things that we love most about visiting the fair.  It was also neat to see those things through kids’ eyes.  =) I can’t wait until next year!
