Kamy had a really great month in February. She and Keller are in the last couple of weeks before their first 5k! They’re doing awesome and are solidly running 5k at a time during their practices. They’re averaging 9:30 minutes / km, which is an awesome start. Kamy loves running with Keller because it’s dedicated one-on-one time and she can talk talk talk talk talk about whatever she wants to with a captive audience. =P Kamy is so excited for the Fresh 5k at the beginning of March.
Kamy is getting much more empathetic and encouraging to Caden. She was very encouraging to Caden when he joined Keller and Kamy running one morning and really helped him run the number of laps he committed to. He learns so much from Kamy, it’s fun to watch them interact together. I’m glad they are such good friends and play together all the time.
At bedtime, Keller and Kamy finished reading the first Harry Potter book and have started reading “From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler.” Kamy likes that the story is set in NYC and The Met, so she can imagine the setting and relate to the characters. We did clarify before they started reading that running away (what the protagonist does in the book) is not okay. =)
Kamy is getting more and confident reading. She’s started to ask for a book at bedtime that she can read until she goes to sleep, which we’re happy to allow! School in general is going well and the kids know that they have to have a good attitude and complete their work or they don’t earn their 20 minutes of screen time. We’re pushing through the AAR reading curriculum for reading and are working on her handwriting legibility and sentence structure. Kamy has been doing a ton of different math concepts — money, telling time, addition, fractions, equivalent fractions, adding fractions, bar graphs, place value, measuring with a ruler in inches and centimeters, sudoku and kenken puzzles, minute math challenges, word problems, and multiplication. Math continues to go smoothly for her, so I’m digging deeper and hunting for new concepts to teach her all the time.
Poor Kamy was sick for two days this month! I think she just had a cold, likely caught from our trip to the Discovery Science Place a few days before. She was pretty pitiful, and she missed dance one day, but she was a good patient and seemed mostly content to rest on the couch, read books, and watch some shows on the tv.
Speaking of museums, the three of us took a day trip into DFW to pick up some furniture from craigslist and go to the Perot Museum in Dallas. The kids seemed to enjoy the museum, but they particularly liked the children’s museum section on the bottom floor. It’s about half the size of the Discovery Science Place here in Tyler, so I wasn’t that impressed. The kids enjoyed playing in all the interactive exhibits though, especially the water tables. We got free admission from our family membership at the DSP, so it made the trip worthwhile.
Kamy loves using her camera to take videos. Now that she can read, she’s delving into the different menus and figuring out what all the settings and filters do. She loves to make silly videos of herself singing made-up songs or spinning around the room with Caden. Her current favorite song is, “A better day to see you, oh hello it’s me …” I love her imagination!
Lastly, Kamy has decided that when she grows up, she’s going to be an “All-er.” What’s an All-er you ask? Someone who does everything, of course! The current list includes the best runner in the world, a momma, a cashier at Brookshires (so she can see me when I go shopping and she’s at work), and a gourmet chef. Why limit yourself?
